Great Expectations, Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, James and the Giant Pumpkin and Thomas the Tank
Engine were just some of the entertaining characters making an appearance at Hertford Town
Council’s Allotment Scarecrow Competition.

The theme this year was literature and entrants also had to include a carved pumpkin as part of their entry. This year’s competition saw a wide variety of entries featured at Cromwell Road, Hertingfordbury The Lovely Grub Garden and North Road allotments sites.

The judging took place on Monday 17th October by the Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Sue Barber and Cllr Peter Ruffles. The Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Sue Barber said ‘There was a very high standard of creative ideas. This is the third year of the competition to encourage families and plot holders to be part of something positive and fun. This year the entries were marked on innovative design and ideas, use of recyclable materials and use of carved pumpkin in their theme which was a great addition. Thank you to all the entrants for their time and effort to enter the competition, it was a joy to see such fantastic work.’

The winning scarecrows were: First prize for ‘Miss Haversham’ from Great Expectations at North Road allotments Second prize for ‘The Book Thief’ at Cromwell Road Allotments Joint third for Mad Hatters Tea Party at Hertingfordbury Allotments ‘Harry O’Hay at Cromwell Road allotments and ‘Bill and Ben’ at The Lovely Grub Garden. The winners will be receiving certificates, rosettes, and local garden centre gift vouchers
