At the meeting of Full Council on Monday 10th July 2023, the Town Council declared a climate emergency. The Council will act to protect human health and biodiversity to the maximum extent its powers allow.

Councillors unanimously supported the view that all governments (national and local) have a duty to do all within their power to limit the negative impacts of Climate Breakdown and are not prepared to wait for the national government to change their policies.

The Council is already implementing a detailed Environmental Sustainability Action Plan with this work having started under the previous administration. The Council is committed to achieving operational carbon neutrality by 2030 and will be introducing new policies in the months ahead to give this vital work added momentum. Chair of Hertford Town Council, Cllr Vicky Smith said: I am pleased that the Council has acted quickly so soon after being elected to take this important decision.

The good progress made within the Council will continue. The Council will now ensure that it demonstrates leadership in setting a positive local example on what is achievable and will advocate and support others to do the same.”
