Hertford Retailers Invited to Enter Winning Windows Christmas Competition

The Winning Windows Competition is being launched this weekend and all of Hertford’s traders are invited to enter. The theme this year is ‘Frost Fair’.

Historically traders, barbers, shoemakers and even pubs gathered on the frozen Thames to sell their goods and services. There were also lots of fun and games to be had such as ten pin bowling, football and of course ice skating rinks as well as an actual elephant walking on the frozen Thames so there should be plenty of inspiration for some amazing window displays this year.

The competition is organised by Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre on behalf of Hertford Town Council. The Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Rosemary Bolton, Deputy Mayor of Hertford Cllr Sally Newton and Cllr Sue Barber will have the unenviable task of choosing the three best dressed windows and will announce the winners at the Hertford Christmas Gala Night on Friday 22nd November.

The three prizes are:

  • A family ticket to the Christmas Show ‘Snow Queen’ at Hertford Theatre
  • A meal for two at Café Rouge
  • A meal for two at The Old Barge Pub.

To enter, retailers should email The Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre, 10-12 The Wash, SG14 1PX) on tic@hertford.gov.uk and supply the business name, address, phone number, email address and contact name.

The deadline for entering the competition and completing the window displays is Monday 18th November as judging will take place shortly after this date in time for the announcement of the winners at the Christmas Gala Night.

The Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Rosemary Bolton, said:

“Christmas is an exciting time in Hertford, our Christmas lights and Gala get everyone in the mood for the festive season. I am always impressed with the window displays of our town shops and businesses throughout the year, but they look extra special in the run up to Christmas.  I hope as many of you as possible will join in with this year's Frost Fair theme.  I know it will be very difficult to judge because of all the exceptional talent we have in Hertford.  Have fun doing it!”
