Hertfordshire is the site of two Garden Cities in England: an experiment not only in social living but also in the design of towns and the

amount of green space included. These garden cities eventually gave rise to New Towns and the proposed Garden Villages. But where did

they come from? Ebenezer Howard's ideas were not original, although much better developed than earlier ones. This talk will look at the

antecedents for the Garden Cities, at the Cities themselves and the post-war New Jerusalem which was meant to solve all housing ills.
