Hertford House in detail…
The historical market town of Hertford has been invigorated with the arrival of new seasonal menus designed by critically-acclaimed chef, Andrew Clarke at Hertford House.
The new A La Carte menus at Hertford House has been designed to champion fantastic produce found locally, complemented with goods from reputable suppliers that Andrew loves and has worked with throughout his career, all cooked over woodfire, as is his passion. Think BBQ Lamb, Courgette, Mint & Crispy Lamb Fat Potatoes £19; Steamed Cod, White Crab, Creamed Potato & Horseradish £18; Roast Truffled Chicken Breast & Chicken Offal Ragu £20. The kitchen is now headed up by Simon Ulph, who previously worked at Smokehouse in Islington and alongside Andrew at the critically acclaimed, St Leonards in Shoreditch.
To accompany the food, wine expert Bert Blaize – previously at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Clove Club and also St Leonards - has curated a diverse list of New and Old-World Wines, as well as those from lesser known, local British vineyards.
Hertford House Hotel is a Grade II listed Georgian Townhouse owned by the Shipton family for over twenty years, and long considered the beating heart of the local community. The hotel bar and restaurant were fully refurbished in spring/summer 2020 in the style of a classic New York brasserie with eclectic art-deco influences. The use of soft leather seats, velvet banquettes and large Arabescato marble tops sit alongside classic Georgian panelling, wall mirrors, inlaid marble floor and an abundance of lush foliage.
Hertford East station is located just 45 minutes from Liverpool Street by train; making it an ideal weekend getaway for food loving Londoners to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, without having to travel too far. Guests can treat themselves to dinner in one of the beautifully designed restaurants, followed by a stay in one of the 28 boutique bedrooms in Hertford House Hotel, wake up to a leisurely breakfast before exploring the local area, stop for lunch and shop for supplies for their journey home - all within a stone’s throw from the local train station.
“With everything that has happened over the past year, fewer people are travelling into the city on a daily basis. I think a lot of people appreciate being able to work more flexibly but also miss some of the things that London has to offer. What we wanted to do was bring some of those inspiring food concepts that you normally only get in bigger cities to people in Hertford. The vision was that we worked with a really great chef to develop innovative and evolving menus to capture some of that sense of excitement about dining out that we’ve all missed so much.” – Daniel Shipton
‘I’m very humbled to be able to work with the team at Hertford House by developing these diverse menus with them. They’re a fantastic bunch of people and it’s been wonderful to be a part of multiple openings in this beautiful historic market town and bring great food to the people of Hertford. – Andrew Clarke
Watch this space for further new openings by the Shipton family this summer, including modern tapas restaurant Anexo, food provisions store & deli, The Store House and Hole In The Wall takeaway.
