The Town Council is pleased to announce that Councillor Rachel Carter was elected as the new Mayor of Hertford for the Civic Year 2024/25 at the Annual Meeting of the Council, held at County Hall on Thursday 16th May 2024.

Cllr Rachel Carter has been a resident of Hertford for almost 30 years and has had a long career in education and publishing. She was elected to the Town Council in 2023. Her consort will be her husband, Jon Banks.

Cllr Rachel Carter’s chosen charities for the year are Hertford and District Guides and East Herts Citizens Advice.

East Herts Citizens Advice provides free, impartial, and confidential advice to anyone who needs it across East Herts, mostly by telephone, but they also have face to face sessions at Sele Farm Community Hub. They help a huge number of residents each year, to find a way through their problems. They campaign to get things changed when they see that public policies are not working.

Hertford and District Guides are based at the West Street Guide Hut in Hertford. Their aim is to help each young member develop their full potential. All members, whatever their ability and background, are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities which are both fun and help to develop skills and confidence.

Town and District Councillor, Cllr Steven Watson was elected Deputy Mayor for 2024/25.

Cllr Rachel Carter said: “It is a huge honour to be Mayor of Hertford. I am amazed and delighted to be offered this opportunity for the coming year and I will do my very best to be a good servant of this beautiful and welcoming town. I have lived here for over 30 years and brought up my family here. I know from my own experience that volunteers are the lifeblood of many organisations in the town, and I hope to get to know many more. I am really excited for the year ahead and looking forward to getting involved in all the activities that the town has to offer.”
