Hertford Town Centre Improvements

Work has started on Maidenhead Street to improve the environment for shoppers and visitors, and to encourage investment into the street.
This first phase is due to finish at the end of November, just in time for the Christmas rush.

Hertford Town Council has been working with East Herts Council and Hertfordshire County Council on the improvements as set out in the Hertford Urban Design Strategy (HUDS) to transform Hertford town centre over the next few years.

The Hertfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership secured £200,000 from the Local Growth Fund, which along with £500,000 from East Herts Council and £300,00 from Hertford Town Council, has helped to start bringing these plans to life, beginning with Maidenhead Street.

The improvements include:
• Reversal of the one way and no right turn at the end of The Wash to stop unauthorised vehicle access to Maidenhead St from The Wash
• A raised crossing at the junction between Maidenhead St and The Wash to improve pedestrian access and to promote connectivity between Hertford East Rail Station and Hertford Theatre
• Removal of the 12 parking bays in Bull Plain and a 'no waiting at any time' at the junction with Bull Plain to reduce traffic created by cars looking for spaces. The three disabled parking bays will however be retained
• Prohibiting cars entering Maidenhead Street between 10am and 5.30pm to create a dedicated area for pedestrians and shoppers
• Resurfacing Maidenhead Street to improve the appearance.

These improvements will mean a more welcoming environment for pedestrians and less traffic in this busy shopping area.
