Hertford Remembrance 2024

Hertford stood still on 10th November 2024 to mark Remembrance Sunday.

The commemorations, organised by Hertford Town Council in partnership with the Hertford branch of the Royal British Legion, started with a parade from St Andrew Street walking through the town to the War Memorial on Parliament Square.

The Mayor of Hertford, Councillor Rachel Carter, was led by the Sergeants at Mace and joined by the Mayor’s Cadets, dignitaries, Servicemen and local uniformed organisations who marched in procession to the War Memorial.

The people of Hertford came out in their hundreds to pay their respects. All united together in a service led by the Mayor's Chaplain, Rev. Alan Stewart, which included the laying of wreaths. This was followed by the salute - by Vice Lord Lieutenant Ant Chapman; after which the procession made its way to All Saints' Church, which held a special service - led by Fr. Simon Cutmore, Vicar of All Saints.

On the day, the Mayor of Hertford also unveiled a blue plaque with Hertfordshire Police Historical Society, for fallen officer John Rapley; who lost his life in active service, on 9th November 1856.

Also, the 6th November 2024, saw the Mayor of Hertford welcoming guests to the Garden of Remembrance service in the Moat Garden of Hertford Castle. Generations were brought together with a short, poignant service to honour fallen members of the Armed Forces. The service was conducted by the Mayor's Chaplain and was attended by Hertford Town Councillors, the Town Clerk, Sergeants at Mace, Mayor's cadets, students and staff from Abel Smith School and veterans of the Armed Forces.

The Mayor of Hertford commented: “The people and friends of Hertford came together, as every year, to remember those who lost their lives in war and to pray for peace and reconciliation in a world where conflicts continue to rage. It was so moving to see residents of all ages at the Memorial, to pay their respects. I was immensely honoured and proud to lead the procession, with the Sergeants at Mace and my Cadets. I am so grateful to all those who played a part in the organisation and to everyone who was able to be there.”
