Hertford Castle ‘BioBlitz’

On Sunday 23rd March, between 12 noon and 4pm, Hertford Town Council will be hosting the Hertford Castle BioBlitz.

This event is free to attend and is being run as part of the development of the Hertford Castle Greenspace Renewal Project, a National Lottery Heritage Fund-backed project looking to conserve nature, preserve heritage and improve infrastructure throughout Hertford Castle’s grounds.

A BioBlitz is a race against time to create a snapshot of the variety of life found in a specific location. Wildlife experts and the public are invited to work together to find and identify as many species of plants, animals and fungi as possible in Hertford Castle’s grounds.

The River Beane Restoration Association will also be taking water samples from the River Lea which runs through the Castle grounds. The Council has committed to supporting Hertford’s Rivers via a number of measures that you can find out more about here

With the help of the public, Hertford Town Council and its partners, will have a clearer record of what wonderful wildlife exists in the Castle grounds and we will be able to take steps to better protect it in the future. As part of the event, the public are also invited to take part in geophysical surveying with TerraDat, to explore what may lie under the grounds of the Castle. Also, Hertford Castle will be open to explore free of
charge.

Councillor Ann Woodward, Chair of the Development and Leisure Committee and Deputy Chair of the Environment and Community Services Committee, said: “We are looking forward to a fun event that will help us identify wildlife in the Castle’s wonderful grounds. We have such natural beauty right in the heart of our town and we as a Council want to work together with our partners to preserve and protect it for the enjoyment of all Hertford’s residents and visitors for many years to come.”
