Have your say on Hertford's Best Recent Additions

In case you haven’t noticed, there are lots of new buildings in Hertford. How do they look? Does their appearance enhance the town? Are there any you really don’t like?

Every four or five years, Hertford Civic Society reviews the new buildings – and this time round, you too can help assess the best new buildings in the town, completed since 2016. Which recent constructions or major refurbishments or open public spaces catch your eye favourably?

With the help of a panel of local people, under an independent Chair (Dr Lee Prosser), we have identified a final shortlist of 10 sites. They are, in no particular order:

  • Edward House & Isabella Houses, Pegs Lane. SG13 8FQ
  • Refurbishment of the White Horse, and new houses behind, Hertingfordbury. SG14 2LB
  • Seven dwellings at 3 to 9 St John’s Street. SG14 1RX
  • Houses and flats at The Ridgeway, Sele Farm. SG14 2FQ
  • Refurbishment of Mill House, and new houses, at Ware Park Mill. SG12 0EA
  • Houses and flats in Tudor Way, Hutton Close and Welwyn Road, Sele Farm. SG14 2DN
  • Conversion of Media House, Ware Road into apartments. SG13 7AB
  • Business units at Great Northern Works, Hartham Lane. SG14 1QW
  • Conversion of tower building at Hertford Brewery into seven apartments. SG14 1QN
  • Comprehensive improvements to The Ridgeway Park. SG14 2JE

We took into account the views of bloggers on our website when we published our initial longlist of 20 sites, together with a set of photographs. Bloggers liked in particular the Ridgeway housing development; Ware Park Mill House and nearby buildings on the River Lea; and the Ridgeway Park.

The final decision will once again be made by the independent panel, using Dr Prosser’s guidance criteria, but everyone can have fun thinking about their top choices, and then sharing their views on the blog page of our website. To remind you about the shortlisted buildings, there is now a final set of 10 photographs on our website. Please make sure that you access the website by 31 August. The independent panel meets in early September to select one or two winners or highly commended locations.

We are trying to encourage discussion and debate about the best new additions to Hertford (and any unsatisfactory ones). Please find below links to view the shortlist and posting your views, the deadline is 31st August.
