EVENTS PROGRAMME 2019
Hertford Town Council has finalised its community events programme for 2019.
The Council is pleased to announce the return of established favourites as well as some brand new events which will suit all ages and including ‘Rock at the Castle’, a free music festival, the ‘Hertford Castle Open Air Cinema’, the three day ‘Food and Drink Festival’ and a new town centre event aimed at 9 – 12 year olds called ‘Hertford Tween Fest’.
All events are free of charge to attend except for The Hertford Castle Open Air Cinema (£7) and the Hertford Castle Art Exhibition (£5).
Cllr Jane Sartin, Chairman of the Development and Leisure Committee, said: “Hertford Town Council’s 2019 community events programme has been planned to ensure there is something for everyone. From bringing your teddy bear along to Hertford Castle for a picnic or enjoying a film in the open air, to enjoying music ranging from rock to brass. There will also be a variety of events to enjoy in the town centre, including the Food and Drinks Festival, Arts Trail and a new Hertford Tweens Fest for 9 to 12 year olds in the summer holiday.”
EVENTS PROGRAMME LINE UP
Hertford Arts Festival
The Hertford Arts Festival will run from Friday 5th April – Sunday 5th May to showcase and promote the local arts and culture in the county town. The festival events include the Hertford Arts Trail, Hertford Castle Craft Market and a variety of cultural events including Courtyard Arts Open Exhibition, Hertford Theatre Week and The Arts Society Exhibition.
Hertford Castle Art Exhibition
Friday 5th April - 6pm – 8pm
Artists exhibiting in the Hertford Arts Trail will exhibit artwork in Hertford Castle for one night only. Over 25 artists will be exhibiting their work at the event. £5 per person includes glass of sparkling wine.
Hertford Arts Trail
Saturday 6th April - Sunday 5th May
Visit up to 30 pop up art exhibitions free of charge in Hertford Town Centre.
The artwork on display will range from sculpture to textile, oil on canvas to watercolour and the majority is available to purchase.
The Arts Trail gives visitors a chance to discover the wide array of independent traders and artists work within the county town.
Hertford Castle Craft Market & Open Day
Sunday 5th May - 12pm – 4pm
Visit Hertford Castle for a free day out. Explore the castle’s historical rooms, basement and dungeon and enjoy the craft market on the castle lawn outside. Up to 70 craft stall holders will exhibit an array of crafts, produce and handmade assortments including jewellery, homeware, stationery, clothing and baked goods. There will also be live music, bar and food stands.
Hertford Castle Fun Day
Sunday 2nd June - 12pm – 5pm
Visit Hertford Castle for a fun day of entertainment for all the family. There will be live entertainment throughout the day, over 50 stands will exhibit on the castle lawn offering funfair games, craft and tombola stalls and much more. There will be food stands, a bar & face painting at the event.
Hertford Castle will be open for visitors to explore and the charity event is free of charge to attend. Organised by Hertford Rotary in partnership with Hertford Town Council.
Cars at the Castle
Sunday 23rd June -12pm – 4pm
Visit Hertford’s largest free car show of the year within the picturesque setting of the Hertford Castle grounds. Up to 100 modern and vintage cars will be on exhibition, there will be a bar and food stalls, live music and Hertford Castle will be open for visitors to explore.
Hertford Castle Teddy Bears’ Picnic with Brass Band Concert & Fun on the Water
Sunday 21st July - 12pm – 4pm
Families and friends are invited to attend the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic held in the Castle Grounds. Children are encouraged to bring along a teddy to the event. There will be a bear hunt, teddy bear parade, magic shows and activities arena.
A live brass band concert will perform throughout the day and Hertford Castle will be open to the public to explore. There will also be free water activities on the River Lea for children and adults to enjoy including kayaking and canoeing.
Rock at the Castle
Sunday 4th August - 12.30pm – 7pm
A free music festival within the spectacular grounds of Hertford Castle. Live music will be performed across three music stages featuring acoustic, folk, indie, rock and pop music. There will also be street food stands and bars at the event.
Hertford Play Day
Wednesday 7th August - 11am – 4pm
Hertford Town Centre will be filled with child friendly activities, games, promotions and events throughout the day, most of which are free of charge to enjoy.
There will be magic shows, face painting, circus workshops, balloon modelling and much more throughout the town.
Hertford Castle Tours & Brass Band Concert
Sunday 18th August - 12pm – 4pm
Enjoy a free guided tour of Hertford Castle and listen to a traditional brass band concert. Pack a picnic or indulge in an afternoon tea whilst relaxing on the castle lawn.
Hertford Tween Fest
Wednesday 21st August - 11am – 4pm
Hertford Tween Fest is aimed at children aged between 8 and 12 years of age. Hertford Town Centre will be filled with child friendly activities, games, promotions and events throughout the day, most of which are free of charge to enjoy.
There will be sports activities, cookery classes, pamper treatments, gaming and arts and crafts.

Gates Open at 19:00 Film Starts at 20:30
Hertford Castle will host two Open Air Cinema screenings with the Castle as its backdrop. Spectators can bring along picnic chairs, snacks and sit back to relax and enjoy the movie underneath the stars. Refreshments available. This spectacular evening sold out last year so tickets must be purchased in advance.
Hertford Castle Heritage Day
Sunday 15th September - 12pm – 4pm
The Castle lawn will host a medieval encampment, Viking battles, falconry displays, archery workshops and much more. Hertford Castle will also be open to the public for visitors to explore the basement,
dungeons, Robing Room and Downshire Suite.
Hertford Food and Drink Festival
Friday 11th – Sunday 13th October
Head to the county town of Hertfordshire for a three day Food and Drink Festival. Event highlights include the Hertford Castle Beer & World Food Festival, street food markets, café, bar and restaurant activities, samples, events and promotions and cookery demonstrations.
Hertford Street Food Market
Friday 11th October - 4pm to late
Indulge in the Hertford Street Food Market with live music in Salisbury Square.
Hertford Food & Drink Festival
Saturday 12th October
If you’re a ‘foodie’, then Hertford is the place to visit. See the town come to life with farmers and charter markets, live cookery demonstrations, free taster, trader promotions, in store events and even a few celebrity chefs.
Hertford Castle Beer & World Food Festival
Sunday 13th October - 12pm – 6pm
A multitude of world food stalls will exhibit on the Castle lawn and a large beer tent will be offering a variety of local and national beers, ales and cider. Hertford Castle will also be open from 12pm – 4pm.
Hertford Christmas Gala
Friday 22nd November - 3.30pm – 8pm
Hertford’s annual Christmas Gala includes Christmas markets, performance stage, Christmas grotto, street entertainment, fairground rides and Christmas tree light switch on.
Shop Hertford This Christmas
Saturday 23rd November
Your one-stop shop to Christmas is on Hertford’s doorstep. Local shops & businesses will be throwing their doors open to offer amazing promotions and festive discounts, encouraging visitors to shop locally by putting their ‘Hert’ into Hertford this Christmas.
